The 5000 Calorie “Diet”

Posted on January 11, 2008. Filed under: Nutrition, cystic fibrosis | Tags: , , , |

Did you realize that for most people living with CF, gaining weight is a tremendous struggle? Many of us complain about having to lose weight, reduce our food intake and watch what we eat to be healthier… can you imagine the if the opposite were true? Sure, it sounds tempting initially ~ to be able to eat virtually anything you want in an effort to maintain your health.

However, as this article points out, consuming enough calories in a day can be, well, consuming.

*Side Note:  While the article points out that it gives the person with CF pretty much carte blanche to eat even the emptiest of calories, more recent research for the CF diet has emphasized the use of “good” fats versus “bad” fats and trying to consume larger quantities of “healthier” calories, including a diet rich in fruits and vegetables.

Hi Ally! I remember my days of being able to eat whatever I wanted. Now that I’m old, 37, my metabolism has slowed and I can only eat about 2500 per day without gaining weight. Even with my running, I still have to watch what I eat. I guess my enzymes work too well.

Nice blog, good to see someone doing this right for the CF World!

Try adding to that Cf related diabetes which cutts out a lot of foods! Yummy ones!

Thanks!

Mark ~ Ally’s my 4 year old with CF and due to her long history of CF complications in the NICU, she is just now learning to eat with her mouth (she’s about 98% g-tube dependent)~ I’d be happy if she ate ANYTHING at this point! I think it’s awesome that running has been such a positive thing for you, and I hope that Ally finds something similar in her life as she grows! I’m keeping tabs on your story; keep up the great work!

Alice ~ I can only imagine how much CFRD affects what you eat! What a nightmare trying to figure that all out! Thanks for pointing that out!
